Before spending more on ads, it is worth checking whether the problem is actually spend at all. Most service businesses we speak to lose money in the same three places, and none of them cost more money to fix, they just take some attention.
1. You are not filtering enquiries before they reach you
If your enquiry form is a single open message box, you are inviting anyone curious to get in touch, including people with no budget, no timeline and no real intention to proceed. Adding a few specific questions, project type, rough budget, timing, does two things at once: it puts off people who were never going to become customers, and it hands you the context you need before the first call.
This one change alone often improves lead quality more than any amount of extra ad spend.
2. You are too slow to reply
In almost every service industry, the first business to respond has a real advantage. Studies on this consistently show response time within the first few minutes converts dramatically better than a reply the next day, and yet most small businesses still reply whenever they get around to it.
An automated first response, even a simple one confirming you have received the enquiry and will call shortly, keeps you in the conversation while you get to the real reply.
3. You are sending every visitor to the same generic page
If someone clicks an ad for "kitchen renovations" and lands on your general homepage, you have made them do the work of finding what they were promised. A dedicated landing page that matches the ad, the same words, the same offer, converts a meaningfully higher share of the same traffic, for the same spend.
What to fix before increasing budget
If any of the above sounds familiar, fix it before you spend more. More traffic through a leaky system just means more leads slipping through the same gaps, faster.
Once those basics are solid, the actual growth levers are:
- Owning a channel people already search on, Google Ads and local SEO for demand that already exists
- Building relationships that refer work back to you, past clients, partners, and (where relevant) the venues or professionals who already work with your customers
- Retargeting people who showed interest but did not convert, cheaper than cold traffic and far higher intent
None of this needs to happen all at once. Fix the leaks first, then add channels one at a time, measuring honestly as you go.
